THE PENIS FLY
"The Penis Fly" is a product of my own and my fishing companion Peter Heiberg's sick sense of humour and were developed a late night after an amusing fly-tying evening, several years ago. Since that evening it has entertained almost everywhere it has been exposed. The fly, a miniature imitation (to prevent speculations!!!), is made of a plastic material and baked in an oven until it gets stiff and hard. It fishes very well in size 6 and should be retrieved in small hefty jerks. It'll mostly catch female fish, but it'll take a few males as well:o) The fly has caught herrings, cod, mackerel, trout and arctic char, a really good all-round fly. The, so far, largest fish is a 5,4 kilo (11,9 lbs) rainbow trout from a Swedish artificial Put & Take stream and a 3 kilo (6,6 lbs) "steelhead" from a Danish artificial P&T stream. The Swedish sport-fishing journalist Calle Bredberg, my good friend from Umeå had some good laughs when he saw the fly and insisted on getting one. After some time he wrote a feature article with the headline; "Fly of the Flies" in a hunting and fishing section of a local northern Swedish newspaper. He was not sure that the newspaper would bring a photo of the fly, but they did together with the following story;

THE PENIS-FLY ENSURED A SECOND PLACE. One of my greatest experiences with the penis-fly were in 1998 when I got invited on an editorial meeting and fishing trip to the Swedish put & take "Norrefors" by Fisk & Fri (Danish sports-fishing magazine). In the P&T where there is an artificial stream the rule is "Fly only". I must admit that P&T fishing never have had my interest so I said thank you for the invitation, the comfort, the good food and the good drinks and said that I, as a protest of the invitation to a P&T water, would bring only one fly. At Fisk & Fri, editor Svend Erik Vardrup directly knew what fly I was talking about.. After some good food, too many drinks and a long night of discussions Søren Honore (Lay-outer) woke us up with an appetizer for the fishing day. There were vouchers of 1000,- Danish kroner (100 pound) to the fisher who caught the most kilos of fish, and 500 Danish kroner to the second and third place. Nice prizes that would be nice to win, so in a moment of weakness and greed I were thinking about borrowing some flies from the others. But I collected my self and tied my penis-fly on the leader without really believing in my chances of catching anything. I were up against experienced fishers such as Poul Stadler, Niels Vestergaard; Svend Erik Vardrup, Søren Honoré, Birger Pedersen, John Furland and all of them with more suitable flies on their leader. After a short time I caught a flabby rainbow of 2,9 kilo (6,3 lbs) which gave me hopes of a possible prize-winning position (already before we started fishing I had given my fish away to one of the other competitors if I should catch any, neither my girlfriend, myself or my cat were ill and therefore we had no need for antibiotics ;o). Poul Stadler almost emptied the stream for fish in no time. Otherwise the fishing was a little sluggish. Lots of rainbows were interested in the penis-fly but they didn't take it seriously. In the last minute of the competition I got a heavy take and after a short and undramatic fight (the poor fish almost had no fins to work with) I could land the largest fish of the day, a medicine-pumped rainbow trout of 5,4 kilo (11,9 lbs) which gave me the second prize (500,- DKR.) with 8,3 kilo (18,2 lbs). Poul got the first prize with his more than 13 kilos (28,6 lbs) and John Furland the third prize with, as far as I remember 6 kilo (13,2 lbs)....
